      "When I was a young boy, God gave me an incredible gift.  It was the gift of death.  It removed any doubts I ever had about God’s existence.

      "All of the children and the mothers you will read about in this book are real.  Most are still alive, a couple have died.  More than a few have been lost to the streets.  I wish I could have stayed out of this book, but if the poor and the victimized that Monica Hannan writes about here need me to be their vehicle, then any personal embarrassment I feel for being talked about in this book is no price at all to be paid..."

      “12-year-old Roberto came to from “El Norte,” the northeast.  It was there that the violence of war brutally and quickly destroyed Roberto’s heritage, killing his parents, brothers, and other relatives as his family worked their rocky farmland one summer evening.  Roberto wandered from the charred ruins and joined dozens of likewise orphaned children.

     "During his travels across Southeast Asia and now in Vietnam, Patrick had been as careful as he knew how to be.  But all he had to do was turn on the tap to be reminded of how perilous this journey could be.  He couldn’t see the bacterial zoo swirling in the brown water that surrounded him, but he could smell it.  He brushed his teeth with bottled water, and if that wasn't available, then with Coca Cola.  Apparently it wasn't enough.  Alone and scared and burning with fever, he lay in this pungent bath in Ho Chi Minh City for most of the night, hoping for relief...
